By 1929, 9 out of 10 cars were equipped with glass all around, to provide protection from wind, rain, mud splashes, road dust, and flying debris. In 1927 laminated windshields were introduced. Prior to this, windshields were made of common glass, which shattered into sharp shards upon breaking. By laminating a layer of film between two layers of thin glass, safety glass was made possible. The film served to hold the glass in place upon breaking, greatly reducing injuries from flying glass. It also provided occupant retention and eliminated cuts that arms and heads received from going through a windshield. The interlayer has improved over the years, as has the quality of the glass, and laminated windshields are found in all cars today. Tempered safety glass is used in the side and back windows of most automobiles on the road in North America. When tempered glass does reach its strength limit, it breaks into smaller granular fragments with relatively smooth edges to reduce the possibility of injury. This clip is taken from the 1937 silent film from the US Bureau of Mines and the Ford Motor Company. The film shows how sand rock and silica sand were quarried, dried, and shipped to a glass plant, where they were melted and made into sheets of glass. To make the safety glass, cellulose acetate is placed between sheets of glass and, after various processes, safety glass for automobile windows is produced. The entire film is available at the US National Archive in College Park …
The ESTREMA MX is robustly engineered and constructed with the highest quality components to assure trouble-free round the clock operation. The press is designed for 3-D lamination of decorative PVC and Kydex films onto pre-shaped panels. The ESTREMA MX is equipped for 3-D lamination of decorative films using a silicone membrane installed in the machine. The standard machine has the capability of pressing in a full membrane mode, or using the membrane during the preheating step and working membrane-less during the pressure step, or removing the membrane and intermediate frame to work completely membrane-less. An optional extender for the tray frame is needed for working in a full membrane-less mode. Time proven techniques have been engineered into the press cycle to assure consistently beautiful results cycle after cycle. The press utilizes both vacuum below the foil and positive air pressure above the foil / membrane to produce crisp definition of the foil in the profile areas and a reliable glue bond. Special program steps are included for films with special requirements such as thick, high gloss films and Kydex. Selecting a preset program file from the library of programs stored in the touch screen controller allows the machine to be switched from membrane mode to membrane-less mode. Laminating with the use of a membrane increases the quantity of heat delivered to the glue line. This feature provides an extra level of assurance that the film is securely bonded to the …
